Tennis in Hong Kong

It's been a couple of weeks since the last entry into this blog so it is only fitting to talk about something exciting and memorable. Even folks at home called my parents after watching this event on TV...

This week there is an exhibition tennis tournament in Hong Kong that teams up several teams based on geographical locations in a matchup style format. It just so happens that one of the members of Team Europe is Agnes Szavay, a young tennis player from Hungary. Needless to say, I had to go. The event was only a few subway stops from work so it was quite convenient as well. The tournament also featured Jelena Jankovic and Venus Williams so watching them play each other was a nice warm-up to Szavay's game. (side note: Venus just about destroyed Jankoic, I think it was 6:3 6:2). Following their match there was a short break during which I managed to get my pic taken with the former world's #13 player.  Following a doubles match between Team Asia pacific and Team Russia came Agnes's game against Dulco of Argentina.

After losing the first set, Agnes was a bit shaky in the second one as well but managed to take the game to a tie-breaker where she won 10-8. In the 3rd set though she looked a bit worn out. Maybe the unusually late start 10:15pm and the colder than average temperatures got to her and ended up losing the decisive set. She was quite friendly and approachable at the autograph session and even handed out one of her own towels to a fellow Hungarian that I met in the stands. She might not have won the match but she carried herself in a way that one cannot complain about. I am a fan.

All-in-all the evening featured 3 matches, the first one starting at 18:30 and the last one ending at 00:30. Long day but it was so worth it...
